“After hours of research I finally found a picture of (fill in the blank ancestor or other research subject). What fabric should I use to make a garment just like this one?’ It’s a conversation I’ve had many times. Gazing at historic photographs can give a tantalizing glimpse into the lives of those who have gone before yet those sepia toned impressions often leave us wanting more. For those of us interested in these historical impressions who hasn’t thought… What did the back look like? What’s around the corner? What did it look like in color? Sadly, those figures can’t wave back and explain these images like the characters in Harry Potter pictures. The contemporary colorization of some of these pictures suggests that they would have liked to convey more of what’s in the image (or perhaps what they wish was in it) if only technology allowed. Let’s spend some time together looking at some modern pictures taken using the photographic technology available in the nineteenth century and the objects in those photos so that we can explore how color is represented in these images. We’ll consider why, even when we can recreate images using the photographic techniques available knowing what color is represented, a wise researcher is still cautious about their interpretations of color historical images. Along the way we’ll consider our own bias for what we think the colors represented should be. Finally, we’ll consider the importance of understanding as much as we can about colors in these images to our interpretation of these images. Though “the” answer to what seems like a simple question above is often sadly elusive, I hope you’ll come away from our time together with fascinating new possibilities for coloring in images left behind.
