Penny Rugs – Wool Appliqué Penny rugs are believed to date to around the 17th century. Penny rugs are also called Button or Spool rugs because of the item that was used as a template for the circles. Penny rugs were a thrifty way for women to reuse and recycle wool fabric into something decorative and functional. The term “rug” was used as a covering for a bed, table, or other piece of furniture and was not generally used on the floor. During the Civil War era, Penny Rugs were primarily made with graduated circles of wool sewn on top of one another and then applied to a base layer of burlap, canvas, or wool with the blanket stitch. Wool cut into the shapes of birds, flowers, stars, animals, and other simple shapes were also commonly used in penny rugs. In this class you will make a 5 inch round decorative wool penny rug. You will learn the basic blanket stitch as well as several other decorative stitches that you can use to embellish and personalize your rug. The Penny Rug Kit will include: 2 - 5 inch wool circles – 1 front 1 back, precut wool pennies in various sizes, precut wool in simple shapes, pearl cotton, tapestry needle, appliqué pins, and practice pieces What you will need to bring to class: 4”- 6” Small sharp tip scissors- embroidery / needlework size, any magnifying glasses / accessories that you may desire for hand sewing Kit Cost - $10.00 Class Length - 90 minutes Class Size - 15 Students The instructor will have additional kits in various sizes and some optional supplies available for those students who wish to purchase.
