For most of the mid-19th Century Americans, apples and honey were available for use but obtaining and preserving both was not always forward as it may seem. This session examines what it took to pick and preserve whole apples until the following year. Likewise, obtaining honey relied upon ether raising honeybee colonies or hunting for “wild” bees, which could also be perplexing and difficult. Drawing upon period agricultural publications and personal narratives , we’ll explore common 19th Century apple varieties and long-term storage methods. Geoff will also discuss the evolution of shelters to protect honeybee hives on farms and how some settlers hunted for honeycomb-laden bee trees in the wild. Join us as we explore these two often forgotten areas in agriculture/foodway history.
